ane Stavola,and her husband,Charlie, discovered the Saltbox house when visiting Cayucos in the mid-1990's. The house looked neglected. It was then rented and sublet by local people and had been owned by a variety of owners who had made various "adjustments" over 110 years. Jane and Charlie felt an unexplainable need to "rescue" the forlorn-looking historic structure, and set about to make it a cozy vacation rental with the ambiance of years gone by -- developing three separate living spaces within the old two-storey home.

The challenge was especially suited to Jane's love of historic architecture and decoration, having already had 30 years experience as an ASID designer, lecturing on NCL cruise ships, winning a segment of "Designers' Challenge" on HGTV, and teaching design classes to adults at Glendale Community College for 18 years.

Jane immediately began gathering antiques,"found" objects, local art, fabrics and accessories to suit the mood of the vintage home, while Charlie oversaw structural improvements, keeping the historic significance of the house in mind.

Now, Jane with the assistance of four creative daughters, continues to oversee the Saltbox as a unique vacation rental, hoping to provide a fun experience in a comfortable home away from home.
